The Death of My Aunt Penelope

Dear aunt, slowly, one by one,
The leaves are falling
From the richly laden apricot
Outside your door!

Slowly again the blue veil of the shivering wind

Is loosed from the trees, where,

In divine innocence,

Milk-white sap and birds

Still sleep.

The dense cool

Of your last room

Makes the grief of your leaving

More heartbreaking.

My aunt, you lived far from life

And you died far from death!

At least, the peaceful glow of

The tiny night light

Above your head

Comforts me and spares me

The grey labyrinth of despair!

My aunt, the angel of gentleness

Has come to take

Your spotless soul!

O Aunt...

My aunt...
